The Young America & Assateague Light
Conservation Framing Each
print is framed using Conservation Acid Free & Lignin Free,
Alkaline pH buffered matboard & backing. Assateague Light towers above the verdant, wildlife preserve
of Assateague Island, Virginia. This area is bounded by the
Atlantic Ocean to the East and Chincoteague Bay and the Virginia
Eastern Shore to the West. The light was erected in 1833 and was rebuilt with a stronger
light in 1867. It has been in active service since 1833. It is
now an automated light with a focal plane of 154 feet within a
142 foot brick and stone tower. Under United States Coast Guard
management, Assateague Light is located on the grounds of the
Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Its grounds are open to
the public. Assateague is located just south of the
Maryland/Virginia border in the Chincoteague wildlife refuge. Its
surroundings are beautiful, and this light is well worth the trip
This light shares the neighborhood with assorted wildlife
including wild deer and horses. This lighthouse has the opposite
problem of many lighthouses: While many lighthouses get closer
and closer to the ocean over time due to erosion, Assateague gets
farther from the sea due to deposits from water currents. It is
now a full mile from the sea. A short walk through woods is
required to reach the light tower. Separate trails guide you
through the beautiful and serene woods, both to and from the
light. Home Page | Glossary
