Pheasants like to hide in heavy cover near food and water. Small streams of water run through these depressions or draws, providing enough moisture for trees and brush to grow along with a heavy weed cover. When approached, the birds will scatter, some running, but others exploding into flight in all directions. A few will hang tight in the cover until you pass and then rocket away behind you. They use the terrain, protection behind trees and the wind to aid in their flight to escape. I have painted two cocks, one using a tree for protection, and three hens. They have broken into flight a few seconds apart. Pheasants will often fly half a mile or more before lighting.
