Bobwhites stay in closely-knit coveys living a life style in which every bird does the same thing together. They eat, sleep and fly as a group. When frightened, they explode into flight in all directions, but after landing, they start calling to each other and quickly get back together.
Sexes can be identified by the white on the heads of the males and cream color on the female heads. They are chunky birds, little larger than robins.
Since they feed largely on weed seeds, they generally stay in weed patches for food and protection. Mortality is high, but good population numbers are kept by prolific nesting habits.
