It was the peak of the rut and I
had not seen a deer although I had heard them in the distant swamp.
Picking up my rattling horns I decided to give it one more try.
Out of the mist a massive buck crashed through the brush and stopped
just six feet short of me. We faced off. I thought he may charge, his
earts were lay back and his nose was flared. The next instant he was
gone. Thinking about him still makes my heart pound. His image
remains with me and has become the inspiration of my new whitetail
piece, Close Encounter.
