City of
Crisfield, the first refurbished dredger of the
skipjack fleet in the Save Our Skipjacks program, was
launched. She is one of 13 skipjacks that the program
will overhaul. The 53 year old vessel was built in
1949 at Rice Yard in Reedsville, Virginia. Captained by Arthur
Daniels, Jr., he plans to return to dredging for oysters from his
Deal Island port.According to the Department of Natural
Resources, there are only thirteen skipjacks still dredging. The
program is intended to not only keep these vessels afloat, but to
provide training in wooden boat repair through an apprenticeship
program.
