The pristine wilderness is
cloaked with a heavy mist that filters the early light. From out of the silence
comes the piercing cry of a solitary bald eagle. Moments like these remain
etched deep in my memory. The sights, sounds and smells of this experience
struck a primal chord within me that inspired this portrait. But there was a
time, not so long ago, when it appeared as though such a wilderness encounter
would become only a memory.
Eagles mate for life. Building huge treetop nests, often six or more feet in
diameter, they lay two or three eggs once a year. DDT was an insecticide that
poisoned the eagle's food chain, causing their eggshells to become too fragile.
But since DDT was banned in 1973, the eagle's numbers have rebounded. Removed
from the Endangered Species List in 1995, they are currently on the Threatened
Species List until their status is reviewed.
The magnificent bald eagle, long revered by Native Americans as America's
symbol of freedom, has also come to symbolize triumph over adversity. The
eagle's remarkable comeback is a modern-day environmental success story.
