30 Yards And Closing Fast
Wolves are long-legged, and, although
they cannot achieve the great speeds of the big cats, they are known
for their endurance. They don’t catch their larger prey with spurts of
sprinting energy, instincts. They catch the weak – the slowest and
sickliest – and keep the gene pool healthy. This is a scene from
Canada. It was cold, and the wind was blowing the powder snow in
sweeps close to the ground. I deliberately painted the wolves running
into the wind. The wind-blown snow and grasses painted in the opposite
direction to the wolves’ advance adds speed and dimension to the
painting. Thirty Yards and Closing Fast was also painted in the looser
